How much does air-con cost in Spain — and how to pay less
Air-con is why summer is your most expensive month in Spain. What cooling really costs per hour, the 24–26°C sweet spot, and why pre-cooling at cheap midday is the best free trick there is.

It's August, it's 38°C outside, and the electricity bill just landed. This is when everyone in Spain asks the same question: how much is the air-con actually costing me? The good news is that most of that bill is controllable — not by sweating it out, but by getting three things right: the temperature, the timing, and the tariff.
Why summer is your most expensive month
In northern Europe the big bill lands in winter. In Spain it's the mirror image: the coast's heat means July and August cooling is the single biggest driver of the year's electricity spend. A home that pays €55 in April can pay €110+ in August — and that's usually air-con, not an error.
Two things made 2026 worse before you touched the remote. Electricity VAT returned to 21% on 1 June 2026 (it had been temporarily cut to 10%), and the electricity tax is back near 5.1% — together lifting bills by roughly 15% without anyone using a single extra kilowatt-hour. So this summer, getting the AC right matters more than usual.
What does running air-con actually cost?
The label says "1,100 W," but that number rarely matches what you pay — an inverter unit modulates down to 30–60% once it hits temperature, while a portable unit guzzles. Here's a realistic picture (assuming ~€0.19/kWh, 6 hours a day, 30 days):

The takeaway: the wall-mounted split most homes already have is the cheapest real cooling in the house. The instinct to wheel out a portable unit is usually the expensive move.

Read these as an upper bound, not a verdict. They assume the unit pulling its full ~1 kW the whole time — but an inverter unit ramps down to 30–60% once the room reaches temperature, so real monthly costs (especially for long runs) are usually lower. Your setpoint and your tariff move every figure in this table — and your own bill is the only place to see which rate you are actually paying, so check yours in a couple of minutes.
The thermostat: your single biggest lever
This is where the money is won. Cooling cost rises fast the lower you set it — each degree below the 24–26°C comfort band adds roughly 7–10% to consumption.

Spain's energy agency (IDAE) recommends 24–26°C for homes in summer; public buildings and shops are held to a 27°C cooling floor for the same reason. Setting 20°C instead of 24°C can add around €40 a month for an average home — for air that's colder than you actually need.
Two free wins on top of the setpoint: use Eco/Auto mode (often ~30% less), and try "dry" mode on humid coastal evenings — pulling humidity out makes the same temperature feel cooler, so you can set higher.
Timing: when you cool matters as much as how much
Here's the part most guides skip, and it's the most powerful. Your home has thermal mass — it holds cool the way it holds heat. You can use that to shift cooling into the cheap hours.
- On a time-of-use tariff (2.0TD): the weekday evening (P1) is the expensive band; midday (P2) is cheaper. Cooling hard at 8pm is the worst-timed, priciest way to do it. - The pre-cool trick: cool the space during the cheaper midday hours, then let the AC idle or switch off through the expensive evening, coasting on the cool you've banked. Same comfort, cheaper hours.
- On an indexed tariff, this is supercharged. Spain's midday is when solar floods the grid and wholesale prices hit their lowest — sometimes near zero. That's exactly when the sun is also driving your cooling need. Pre-cooling at noon on an indexed (dynamic) tariff can be remarkably cheap. If you have solar panels, it's cheaper still: peak production and peak cooling happen at the same hour.

The kit: inverter, fans, filters, sizing
Small hardware facts with outsized effects:
- Inverter vs old on/off. A modern inverter unit can use up to 40% less than a conventional one that cycles full-blast then off. Inverter tech became standard in Spain around 2015 — so if your unit is more than 8–10 years old, it's probably the thirsty kind, and replacing it can pay for itself.
- Fans are almost free. A fan uses a fraction of the power of AC and makes you feel about 3–4°C cooler through airflow. Run one with the AC and you can raise the setpoint a degree or two for the same comfort — a cheap multiplier on every point above.
- Clean the filters. A clogged filter can raise consumption 10–15% because the unit works harder to move the same air. Clean them every 2–3 weeks in peak summer.
- Right-size the unit. An undersized AC runs flat-out constantly and never quite gets there; an oversized one short-cycles. Match the unit to the room.
Free cooling: the thermal-mass playbook
Before you reach for the remote, work the building the way Spanish homes were designed to be worked — the same thermal logic that makes Spanish homes so cold in winter keeps them cool in summer:
- *Close the persianas and blinds* on sun-facing windows during the day. On a July afternoon with direct sun, this alone can cut a room's cooling demand by around 20%.
- Ventilate at night and early morning, when the outside air is cooler than inside, then shut everything up before the day heats up to trap the cool.
- Cross-ventilate — open windows on opposite sides for a through-draught.
- Cool the room you're in, not the whole house.

The part that ties it together: your tariff
All the running-cost numbers above hinge on one input you can change today: the price of a kilowatt-hour. Air-con doesn't just add to your bill — it multiplies the effect of a bad tariff, because you're buying so many more units in July and August. A poorly matched contract that's merely annoying in spring becomes expensive in summer.
Two questions decide it: are you on the right type of tariff for when you actually cool, and is your contracted power (potencia) right — enough to run the AC alongside the oven without tripping, but not so much you overpay a fixed charge every day?
