Why Spain? Solar yield
Simple: the sun. Spain boasts more than 2,500 hours of sunshine a year. That is almost double that of Northern Europe or the UK.
For your roof, that means a much higher output per panel. Roughly speaking, every installed kWp of panels in Spain yields around 1,400 to 1,800 kWh per year — depending on location, roof pitch, and orientation. In Northern Europe, you would expect around 850–950 kWh. The exact same panels, nearly double the electricity.
The Costa Blanca (Alicante/Valencia region) sits at the sunnier end of that range: plenty of direct sunlight, mild winters, low cloud cover. The Costa Brava (Girona/Catalonia region) is slightly less extreme but still excellent — well above what you are used to back home. In short: on both coasts, an installation operates productively year-round, including during winter.
"Why no solar panels in Spain?" — Debunking the myth
A common question online. And understandable: for years, you saw surprisingly few panels on roofs across this sun-drenched country. Why?
The answer is historical. Until 2018, Spain had the infamous *"impuesto al sol"* (sun tax): you paid a levy on the electricity you generated yourself. That made private solar power financially unattractive and completely locked down the market.
That tax was abolished in 2019 (via Real Decreto 244/2019). Since then, there has been a massive catch-up. By the end of 2025, Spain had around 9.3 GW of self-consumption capacity — solar panels are now a normal sight on residential roofs.
So: while the myth was once true, the premise is now outdated. There are plenty of solar panels in Spain today, and public policy actively encourages them.
How much does it cost? Prices and purchasing
Prices vary widely depending on the provider, roof type, and whether you want a battery. As an indication:
- Complete roof installation (professional): roughly €4,000 to €9,000 for a standard household system (around 3–5 kWp), including installation.
- Home battery: can easily add €3,000–€6,000+ on top — but significantly increases your self-consumption (more on that later).
- Plug-and-play kit (balcony panels): a few hundred euros. A completely different product with a completely different purpose.
Treat every quote critically. Always ask for the expected annual yield for your specific roof (not a generic estimate), and check whether legalisation and registration with the distribution network operator are included in the price. A cheap quote that dumps the paperwork on you isn't always the cheapest option.
Can you install them yourself? Legalisation in Spain
For a full roof system: in practice, no. And that comes down to one crucial distinction.
"Installing" is not the same as "legalising." You can physically lay panels on a roof, but without legalisation, your installation cannot officially operate, you won't qualify for feed-in compensation or subsidies, and your property insurance may refuse coverage.
In short, legalisation means:
- Complying with Spanish electrical standards (REBT).
- Having technical documentation prepared and signed by an accredited professional. For installations up to 10 kW, a memoria técnica de diseño (MTD) usually suffices instead of a full engineering project file.
- Registering the system with the regional Industria department (varies by autonomous region).
- Coordinating with the grid operator and supplier: CAU code, contracts, meter configuration.
For installations up to 15 kW with surplus compensation on urban land, there is an exemption from connection and access permits. Helpful, but it does not exempt you from providing technical documentation.

Plug-and-play solar panels (balcony panels)
This is the exception where you can do it yourself. A kit solar enchufable: one or two panels with a micro-inverter that you simply plug into a wall socket.
The rules in brief:
- Up to 800 W: such a kit falls under "low-power self-consumption without grid feed-in" — exempt from heavy administrative procedures. No certified installer or engineering project file required.
- One mandatory step remaining: you must notify your distributor (Endesa, Iberdrola, Naturgy…). This is a simple administrative notification; some brands handle this directly via their app.
- You choose between without surplus (simpler) or with surplus. Without surplus, you don't receive feed-in compensation — for such small kits, this is hardly a financial loss.
Note: if you live in an apartment, always check the rules of your comunidad de propietarios (homeowners' association) and check if your home insurance covers it. A balcony kit is ideal for starting small, not for running an entire household.
Exporting power: How does compensación de excedentes work?
The electricity you generate but don't consume immediately goes into the grid. In Spain, you are compensated for this through the *compensación simplificada de excedentes* (regulated under RD 244/2019, for installations up to 100 kW).
It is vital to understand: this is compensation, not a sale. The exported power is offset against the electricity you draw from the grid during the same billing period. And there is a hard limit:
Your monthly compensation can never exceed the cost of the electricity you consumed from the grid that month. If you generate far more than you consume in a given month, you essentially surrender that surplus for free. A large excess does not generate cash income.
Here is a numerical example. Suppose you feed back 150 kWh at €0.08/kWh: that is €12 in compensation. If you had consumed those same 150 kWh yourself (for example, with a battery) instead of buying them expensive from the grid at ~€0.18/kWh, you would have saved ~€27. The difference between €12 and €27 explains why self-consumption usually pays off more than exporting — and why a battery, or timing your energy use wisely, is often more attractive than sending everything back to the grid.
This is particularly relevant for a second home left vacant for part of the year: during those months, your consumption is low, so there is little grid usage to offset against a large solar surplus.

Subsidies and tax benefits
Pay close attention here, as the rules change frequently and depend on your municipality and tax residency status.
National grants (Next Generation EU): the major nationwide programme ended in late 2023. No new scheme of equivalent scale has opened since. Regional (autonomous) calls occasionally appear with limited budgets that run out quickly — worth checking, but do not rely on them.
IRPF deduction (income tax): those who pay Spanish income tax (IRPF) can claim a deduction for energy-efficiency home improvements — up to 40%, and in certain cases more. This scheme has been extended until 31 December 2026. Official source: the Agencia Tributaria (deducciones por obras de mejora de eficiencia energética).
IBI reduction (property tax): this is municipal and applies regardless of your tax residency status. Around 40% of Spanish municipalities offer an IBI discount for solar panels — often 30–50% off for 3 to 5 years. Exact terms vary by municipality.
ICIO discount (construction tax): many municipalities also grant a discount on the construction tax, sometimes up to 95%.
Regional: on the Costa Blanca, regional support is managed by IVACE (Comunitat Valenciana); on the Costa Brava, by ICAEN (Catalonia). Budgets and calls change yearly, so check the current status in your region.
What about your electricity contract?
This is where many people miss out on savings. Solar panels completely change your consumption profile — and often your contracted power (*potencia*) — yet people forget to adjust their electricity contract accordingly.
Two key things to know:
- Feed-in compensation varies by supplier. One comercializadora may compensate your excess energy significantly better than another. It pays to compare.
- A dynamic (market-indexed) tariff often fits well with solar. Your own generation covers expensive afternoon peak hours, while the power you do pull from the grid is bought mostly during cheap hours. This way, your installation works against real market prices rather than a smoothed-average fixed rate.

- How much time do I spend here? A main residence occupied year-round will pay back the investment far quicker than a holiday home left empty for months.
- Do I use a lot of electricity during the day? Air conditioning in summer, pool pumps, working from home — all align perfectly with solar hours. If your usage is mostly in the evening, a battery becomes much more relevant.
- Do I pay IRPF in Spain? If not, don't factor the personal income tax deduction into your calculations.
