Running-cost calculator

How much does an electric boiler cost to run in Spain?

An electric central-heating boiler draws 6,000 to 14,000 watts when it fires, cycling on and off with the thermostat. It's uncommon on the Spanish coast — most homes there heat with reverse-cycle air-con or gas — but where one is installed, it's a heavy load, and winter running costs depend enormously on how well the home is insulated. A reverse-cycle heat pump delivers far more heat per unit of electricity. Set the hours to the boiler's actual daily firing time.

kWh/day = (W / 1000) × hours
cost/month = kWh/day × (days/week ÷ 7) × 30.44 × rate
cost/year = kWh/day × (days/week ÷ 7) × 365.25 × rate

Direct electric heating is expensive — a reverse-cycle heat pump delivers about 3x the heat per unit of electricity.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an electric boiler cost to run in Spain?

A lot when it runs: an 8 kW boiler firing 2 hours a day uses about 16 kWh — roughly €3 a day, or €90 a month — at an all-in rate near €0.19/kWh. Insulation changes this drastically.

Is an electric boiler cheaper than a heat pump?

No. A reverse-cycle heat pump delivers around three times the heat per unit of electricity, so for regular heating it's far cheaper to run.
