Running-cost calculator

How much does a washing machine cost to run in Spain?

A washing machine pulls anywhere from 500 to 2,200 watts during a cycle, and most of that goes on heating the water rather than turning the drum. Because it runs in cycles, set the hours to your cycle length and the days to how many washes you do each week. The single biggest lever is temperature: a 30°C or cold wash uses a fraction of the energy of a 60°C one. Running full loads at night on an off-peak or indexed tariff cuts the cost further.

How we calculate this

kWh/day = (W / 1000) × hours
cost/month = kWh/day × (days/week ÷ 7) × 30.44 × rate
cost/year = kWh/day × (days/week ÷ 7) × 365.25 × rate

Most of a wash's energy heats the water — cold or 30°C cycles cost far less, and off-peak loads cheaper still.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a washing machine cost to run in Spain?

Roughly €0.10–€0.30 per cycle at an all-in rate near €0.19/kWh, depending mostly on the wash temperature. Cold and eco washes sit at the low end; hot 60°C washes at the high end.

Does washing at 30°C really save money?

Yes — heating the water is most of a wash's energy use, so a cold or 30°C cycle can use a fraction of the electricity of a 60°C one.

Our picks to cut this cost

  • Cold-wash liquid detergent

Heating the water is nearly all of a wash cycle's cost; a cold-wash formula lets you drop to 30 °C.
