Running-cost calculator

How much does a space heater cost to run in Spain?

Electric space heaters run 500 to 3,000 watts and are 100% resistive — every watt in becomes one watt of heat, no more. That makes them the most expensive way to warm a room over time. A reverse-cycle heat pump (the same unit as a split air conditioner) delivers roughly three times the heat per unit of electricity. Space heaters make sense for quick, occasional warmth in one room; for regular heating they add up fast. Enter the wattage and hours to see the real running cost.

kWh/day = (W / 1000) × hours
cost/month = kWh/day × (days/week ÷ 7) × 30.44 × rate
cost/year = kWh/day × (days/week ÷ 7) × 365.25 × rate

A reverse-cycle heat pump delivers about 3x the heat per unit of electricity — space heaters are the priciest way to warm a room.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an electric heater cost to run in Spain?

A 2,000 W heater run 4 hours a day costs about €0.38 an hour and roughly €46 a month at an all-in rate near €0.19/kWh. Run longer, and it climbs quickly.

Is a space heater cheaper than central heating?

For a single room briefly, sometimes. But per unit of heat, a reverse-cycle heat pump is around three times cheaper, so for regular use it wins.

Our picks to cut this cost

  • Draught excluders for doors and windows

Spanish frames leak air, and sealing them cuts the hours your heating has to run.

  • Thermal curtains

Uninsulated Spanish walls lose heat fast; heavy curtains hold it in the room.
